Range Rover Key Fob Refurbishment Kit

These instructions are for the full key fob refurbishment kit. If you have purchased an alternative kit please follow the relevant sections.

Replacing the Front buttons

The front button pad on the key-fob is push-in-fit. If you look at your new button pad you will see a small lip all the way around the edge. It is this lip that holds the button pad into the key-fob.

First you need to remove the old button pad. The easiest way to do this is by using a Stanley blade, a small screwdriver, or the tip of a small pair of scissors. You simply prise off the old button pad. Don’t be afraid as long as you prise around the edge of the buttons there is nothing underneath you can damage, just make sure you do not damage the outer edge of the key fob case as the case is not being replaced.

Once the remains of the old buttons have been removed you simply push the new buttons in place.

Replacing the Rear battery cover, batteries & ‘O’ ring or just replacing the Batteries

Look at the rear of your key fob. Both the key fob and the battery cover are marked with a small arrow. Hold the key fob in your hand, face down with the key blade pointing in the 12 o’clock position. You should notice the battery cover has a small arrow marked on it in the 3 o’clock position and the key fob should also have a small arrow marked on it at the 2 o’clock position.

It is important these arrows are lined up when removing the battery cover. Use a coin (the larger the better) to twist the battery cover anti clock wise until the arrows meet. The battery cover & batteries should then drop out when you turn the key fob over. You may need to give it a little tap in the palm of your hand. If your key fob is old & tatty you may find that grease & dirt have been trapped around the edge of the battery cover making it harder to remove, if this is the case once the arrows are lined up prise the battery cover out using a small knife or screwdriver.

The batteries fit into the back of the battery cover, if you are just replacing the batteries you swap the old with the new making sure you replace them the same direction as the ones you removed.

If you are replacing the battery cover at the same time you can discard the old battery cover & batteries and insert the new batteries into the new battery cover making sure they are in the correct position. Now slide the new waterproofing O’ring over the top of the new battery cover.

Finally  re-insert the battery cover fitted with batteries into the key fob. Once again remember the battery cover will not drop in unless the two arrows are aligned. Using your coin again simply twist the battery cover clock wise until the arrow on the battery cover is pointing to the 3 o’clock position again.

Please note: if the batteries have either fully discharged or have been removed from the key fob for more than a few minutes resynchronisation may be required.

Resynchronisation

On vehicles up to 1997, resynchronisation is achieved by locking or unlocking the driver’s door using the vehicle key and then with the key still in the door immediately pressing the button on the remote handset. The BeCM monitors the condition of the driver’s door CDL switch to initiate the resynchronisation.

On vehicles from 1997, friendly resynchronization was introduced on vehicles with passive immobilisation. A remote handset that is not synchronised to the BeCM will automatically be resynchronised when the key is inserted in the ignition without using the vehicle key or Emergency Key Access (EKA) procedure. The resynchronisation uses a pick-up coil in the remote handset and a passive coil located around the ignition barrel. The passive coil provides a signal for the remote handset to transmit an unlock signal to remobilise the vehicle.
